After establishing a Medical Assistant program at the Peosta campus, NICC opened an additional Medical Assistant program at the Calmar campus in the fall of 2017 to meet healthcare industry skilled workforce needs.
Now the Calmar program has won accreditation from the Medical Assisting Education Review Board. The designation follows a comprehensive evaluation of the NICC Calmar program. Graduates of the Medical Assistant diploma program at the Calmar campus are now eligible to sit for the CMA national certification exam.
Medical assistants are allied health professionals who perform administrative and clinical functions that support the services of physicians and other health practitioners in a clinic or ambulatory care setting. Job duties include collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, performing basic laboratory tests, sterilizing medical equipment, obtaining blood draws, performing electrocardiograms and preparing patients for diagnostic testing. Administrative functions include patient scheduling, correspondence, performing billing services and purchasing supplies.
