Decorah meteorologist Richard Bernatz says the first half of April in Decorah has set a number of records this year.
In his climate report for April 1st--15th, Bernatz notes that the average Decorah temperature of 30.4 was 15.5 degrees below the average of 45.9 degrees, colder than any other first half of April by 2.2 degrees and putting this April on track to be the coldest April on record.
Another possible record for this April is the latest-ever first day of the year with a maximum temperature of 60 degrees or more. Decorah has not yet had an "official" maximum of more than 58 degrees. The latest first 60-plus maximum day was April 26th in 1951.
Several April snowfall records also could be set this month. Decorah has already had six days with measurable snowfall, beating the previous record. 7.8 inches of snow has fallen in Decorah this April, which means Wednesday's predicted snowfall could push the total beyond the all-time record for most snow in April--13.5 inches in 1973 (The National Weather Service is predicting 5-7 inches of snow on Wednesday).
Let's hope there's one snowfall record we won't break this year--the latest snowfall on record came with one inch of snow on May 3rd of 2013.
