Volunteers needed for 14th annual Mississippi River Clean Up Day on Saturday

Pool 9 of the Upper Mississippi River extends along 31 miles of the Iowa border and contains over 35,000 acres of aquatic habitat. It's a popular place for fishing enthusiasts from Winneshiek County.

The Friends of Pool 9 River organization is looking for Winneshiek County volunteers for its 14th annual Clean Up Day this Saturday.  Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the VFW Building across from the ball diamond in Lansing. Some boats may also meet in Lynxville, Ferryville, New Albin, Heytman's and Black Hawk Park.  Volunteers will be provided with gloves, water, trash bags,  a FOP9 clean up t-shirt and a complimentary sack lunch when finished (approximately noon). Last year there were 107 volunteers. In the past 14 years, nearly 140,000 pounds of debris have been removed from the river.

Those under 18 years of age must have a parent's signature on the registration form.  All participants must register. Duties will be assigned after registration.  Volunteers in boats must have a personal floatation device (life jacket).  One will be provided if needed.
