Letter to the Editor: "Vote 'No' and nip this thing in the bud"

(The following Letter to the Editor has been submitted by Dennis Ohlert of Decorah):

"Something nobody's talking about ref: the utility vote is where the money to buy Alliant Energy is going to come from.

I have watched children in WalMart screaming because Mommy wouldn't buy them something they saw and wanted.  If the vote is "Yes" and the City decides they can't afford this, will we hear a lot of whining and screaming about how "we want it anyway", with no regard to the possibility of bankrupting the City?

If the electric utility is adopted will your property taxes soar to pay for it?

And, do we really need another government-run utility?  The City can't even manage to operate the water system in the black.  Just watch.....the water rates are going to skyrocket as soon as the electric utility vote is over.  They've already risen to pay for rainwater runoff.  Could we expect that from an electric utility, too?

There seems to be a lot of language-twisting on the part of the "Yes" faction, hinting at heaven on earth if we'll only vote "Yes".  I'm reminded of P.T. Barnum's remark:  "There's a sucker born every minute."

Vote "No" and nip this thing in the bud."
