Reconstruction of the Steyer Bridge may be completed this summer

This could be the year that repairs to the Steyer Bridge are completed.

The bridge is on Twin Springs Road, almost underneath Highway 52.  It was built in 1875 by Decorah stone mason Michael Steyer and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The City of Decorah hired a stone mason in 2016 to do repairs to the bridge.  The project proved more complicated than first thought, so repairs ran into last year.  Those repairs are completed now at a total cost of around $80,000, but the bridge deck still needs to be replaced.  City officials are now studying a plan to replace the bridge deck on the Steyer Bridge, with a preliminary cost estimate of $50,000 to $100,000.
