A 10-cent increase in Iowa's gas tax went into effect in March of 2015. The increase was controversial when it went into effect at the time, but that controversy has largely ended.
That's in part because motorists are now seeing the physical effects of the State of Iowa having more tax funds it can send to counties.
Winneshiek County Engineer Lee Bjerke says Winneshiek County has received over $3 million in additional funds in the first three years of the higher gas tax. Winneshiek county's gas tax revenues increased by over $1 million in 2015-2016; by $721,000 in 2016-2017 and by $1.5 million in 2017-2018.
