Decorah meteorologist Richard Bernatz the winter of 2017-2018 in Decorah was not a very severe winter.
Bernatz has used 15 weighted measures to determine winter severity and has concluded November 1st through February 28th was 85th out of 125 years of Decorah weather statistics in terms of winter severity.
Out of the 15 categories, the past winter in Decorah ranked above average in severity in only four categories--the number of days with a maximum temperature below 20 degrees, the number of days with a maximum temperature below 10 degrees, the number of days with a maximum temperature below zero and the number of days with a low temperature of 10 below or more.
However, the average maximum temperature and average low temperature during 2017-2018 were higher than average. Also, snowfall totaled 18.7 inches, which was 10.4 inches less than the average of 29.1 inches.
