(decorahnews.com has received e-mails, phone calls and in-person comments about telephone polling being done by Alliant Energy, asking whether this polling was "push-polling," which is primarily used to distribute propaganda rather than gather information. We reached out to the utility and received the statement below):
"The possibility of Decorah moving to a municipal utility is a complex issue that, if approved, will lead to rate increases, decreased reliability and ultimately cost the community $50 million. Our goal between now and May 1st is to have a conversation with Decorah residents and businesses about the risks and realities of forming a city-owned electric utility.
All of the information referenced in our poll questions has been previously provided to the city council and has appeared in various local news reports. This phone poll simply allows a small group of voters to share with us what they've heard on this issue and share their opinions on it.
We understand why Decorah Power would be concerned about 30 percent higher rates for customers. The entire community has similar concerns about their hard-earned money. One feasibility study was completed by Concentric Energy Advisors, a certified utility-appraiser, with experience working on both sides of municipal issues. They've participated in these types of issues before the Iowa Utilities Board. Concentric Energy Advisors calculated much higher rates for a municipal utility versus Alliant Energy's future rates. It's a very convincing reason for Decorah to vote 'no.'"
