(The following Letter to the Editor has been submitted by Ellen Rockne of Decorah):
"Folks I know have been getting some strange phone calls lately, the kind of automatic robo-calls that are easy to send out if you're a profit-hungry corporation with bottomless pockets. Alliant Energy stands to lose millions of dollars if we confirm that a local, municipal utility is better for our community (as so many have before us), so let's be wary of wonky opinion polls out of New Jersey that skew concerns toward the "rights" of this huge multi-national corporation. Propaganda at its most slick.
Alliant vigorously opposed a referendum that will allow us to see ALL the numbers, but to no avail. On May 1st, we can vote to apply with the Iowa Utility Board and discover, through that transparent process, why the two separate feasibility studies in this David-and-Goliath struggle are so wildly divergent.
Neighbors, let's say yes to learning more. We have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. VOTE YES on the May 1st referendum, because knowledge—oh yes—is power."
