Northeast Iowa students in 7th through 11th grade can enter the Iowa Bankers Association "Money Smart Kid Essay Contest" for a chance to win a $1,000 college savings account, funded by the Iowa Bankers Association.
Information about the essay contest is now available at the two offices of Viking State Bank in Decorah. The contest is tied to "Money Smart Week," which is April 21st through April 28th Essays are due to the Iowa Bankers Association by March 16th.
Students can enter the contest by writing an essay of 400 words or fewer, describing the potential devastating effects of one type of natural disaster (such as a fire, flood or hurricane, etc.) on a family's financial situation. The essay should include tips and resources for readers to help prepare them for a potential, future, unexpected crisis.
The 2018 Money Smart Kid award recipient also serves as an ambassador during Money Smart Week in Iowa, visiting several communities across the state.
