Alliant Energy has issued a statement in the wake of the Decorah City Council's 6-1 vote to schedule a referendum May 1st on the proposed municipal electric utility:
"Alliant Energy has proudly partnered with residents and businesses in Decorah for the past 100 years, and we're ready to work with the community to help shape its energy future for the next 100 years.
Tonight, the city council voted to schedule a special election allowing voters in Decorah the opportunity to choose whether or not Decorah should start a new municipal-owned utility. We respect the council's decision.
From now until the May 1st vote, we plan to engage our customers to discuss the significant risks and costs involved in creating a municipal utility. Concentric Energy Advisors says it will cost the city of Decorah $50 million to attempt to provide the same level of service as Alliant Energy. Their study also shows that a city-owned utility will lead to a 30% rate increase, less reliable service from an out-of-town crew, and fewer renewable energy options.
Voting against a municipal electric utility will keep Alliant Energy working for Decorah and allow us to provide the safe and reliable service our customers have come to expect."
