Decorah HS Head football coach Bill Post announces his retirement

Decorah Viking Head Football Coach Bill Post has decided to retire from his head coaching duties.  

For the past 45 years, Post has been a fixture in the football program as an assistant coach, co-head coach and head coach.  He began his coaching career in Decorah as an assistant coach in 1973 and served in that position until 1993 under previous head coach Dick Wuest.  From 1993 until 1999, Post and Dennis Olejniczak became co-head coaches.  In 2000 Post became the head coach.

During his combined time in the program, Post has coached in over 400 games, been a part of 10 district championships, 10 conference championships, 22 playoff appearances, 4 state runner-up finishes and 5 state championships.  

As a head coach and co-head coach, Post compiled an overall record of 188-71 during the 24 years in the roles.  During that time, he led 14 teams to the playoffs as a part of 10 district championships and compiled an overall record of 31-13 in playoff games.  Playoff runs were highlighted with nine quarterfinal appearances, six semifinal appearances, five championship games and a state title in 2012.  Between 2008 and 2013, the Vikings amassed a 67-11 record and played in six straight quarterfinal games that also included a 25 game win streak in 2012 and 2013.  Post was recognized as Class 3A State Coach of the Year by the Iowa Football Coaches Association in 2004 and 2012 and was inducted into the IFCA Hall of Fame in 2014.  

"I have been blessed with 45 years of being in dream job," said Post.  "I am thankful to the good Lord that he directed and allowed me to work in such a great school with tremendous people.  It has been an honor to teach and coach here.  It has been a lot of fun working with my fellow coaches and administrators through the years who I consider true friends.  I have greatly appreciated the support and backing of the community for not only Decorah football, but also all school activities.  This is a big reason why this school system is so successful.  A special thank you goes out to all of the players through the years who have worked so hard and unselfishly, for they are what has made the Decorah football program something to be held in high esteem.  While I look forward to spending more time with my family and grandchildren, I couldn't not be more proud of being a Decorah Schools employee, coach and Viking!"

Said Activities Director Adam Riley, "While his success on the field speaks for itself, those who have known him best are well aware that events on the field were secondary to his true mission of helping young people learn to contribute to a team and becoming the best citizens they can be.  We are very thankful for the sacrifices he has made for the young people of our community and wish him the best as he makes more time to spend with his family."
