January weather was down, up, and wet

Posted: Thu, Feb 1, 2018 5:08 PM

January weather was generally warmer than usual, but marked by contrast. The average temperature was 18.1 degrees, 2 degrees warmer than historical average. However, the month was one of contrasts with the first half temperatures well below average, and the second half, well above average – with a record high temperature of 50 degrees being recorded on January 20.

Precipitation for the month was recorded at 1.47 inches - .44 inches higher than average. Most of that precipitation, and the rain that caused the most concern with ice jams and near flooding, was the 1.22 inch rainfall on January 22.

The warmer than average temperature was consistent with the statistic of 10 of the last 12 months being warmer than average.
