City of Decorah is observing "Home Rule" anniversary

Local governments in Iowa derive their powers from the State Constitution.  It didn't always use to be that way, however.  Previously the Iowa Legislature determined what powers to grant local governments in the state.  But in 1968, voters approved a "Home Rule Amendment" to the state constitution which transferred many powers to the local level.

The City of Decorah is observing the 50th anniversary of that change.  City council members have unanimously approved a resolution in observance of the anniversary and Mayor Lorraine Borowski has signed a proclamation which reads in part, "Citizens have the ability to readily voice their thoughts, enabling elected officials to thoroughly evaluate and make the appropriate, necessary decisions for the well-being of their citizens and community."
