City's two levees receive accreditation from FEMA

In November of 2010, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers gave an "unacceptable" grade to the right bank levee in Decorah and a "minimally acceptable" grade to the left bank levee.  That touched off what became a seven-year project to win back accreditation for the levees.

City officials announced Monday night that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has sent the city a letter stating that right bank and left bank have now won accreditation.

There is still work being done on winning FEMA and Corps of Engineers approval for the diversion channel in Decorah, but the accreditation of the two levees is a major milestone for the city in meeting the standards set forth by the federal government for levees.
