LaVonne Sharp, secretary of Board and Collections Committee, greets visitors at the Historical Society

The Winneshiek County Historical Society has moved to the lower level of the historic Smith Building at 305 Montgomery Street. The office faces Montgomery Street and is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. or by appointment.

Member volunteers are happy to assist anyone on research on county history, home and building histories, architecture identification, family history and genealogy. Archives are located at the 1878 Old Jail on the Courthouse grounds where the Historical Society also has an office.

Secretary of Board and Collections Committee LaVonne Sharp commented that she likes the new space, now that they've moved and are getting settled in, she says it's more efficient and she appreciates the window looking out to Montgomery Street.

Decorah resident Allan Weinand is working on his genealogy certification through Boston College and is utilizing the Winneshiek County Historical Society for his research project involving a diary written pre 1900. Weinand is reading the diary from a Winneshiek County resident from Burr Oak. The diary is actually from the 1870s.
