The Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT) has announced it will be honoring Lyle and Sue Luzum of Calmar on November 16th for their donation of 170 acres to the organization.
The recognition will come at the organization's third annual Land Protector Recognition Dinner at the Embassy Suites hotel in downtown Des Moines.
The Luzum gift to SILT--the largest the organization has received to date—ensures a future for the heritage farm as a provider of local food for northeast Iowa. The Luzum family has farmed the land since 1873, most recently raising sheep and growing organic grains. Planning their retirement, Lyle and Sue opted to donate the farm with the full support of their daughter.
