The Minnesota Department of Commerce has announced that three gas stations in NE Iowa, including the Kwik Star in Decorah, are among the 44 gas stations in SE Minnesota, NE Iowa and Western Wisconsin that may have received gasoline tainted with diesel fuel.
The fuel came from a fuel distribution terminal in Eyota, Minnesota operated by Magellan Midstream Partners. The deliveries were made between 1:30 p.m. Friday and 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The Kwik Stars in Decorah and Cresco received shipments, as did the Farmers Cooperative in Fredericksburg.
A news release from Magellan says there was an operations malfunction which caused a "small percentage of diesel fuel" to be inadvertently added into gasoline. When Magellan caught the mistake, it notified State of MInnesota officials. State officials say it's unlikely the small amount of contamination will cause severe or long-term vehicle damage. But they're recommending that drivers who bought gas at the stations should be on the alert for poor performance, such as engine knocking or pinging.
Magellan says it will cover all legitimate claims. Because Magellan is headquartered in MInnesota, any driver with a claim needs to contact State of Minnesota Commerce Department's Weights & Measures Division at (651) 539-1555.
