October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Winneshiek County Celebration of Life started in 1998 as a program to help pay the costs of mammograms for uninsured and under-insured women. Since that time, it has expanded to provide fuel and food cards for local men and women who are in active cancer treatment.
Since 1998 WCCOL has helped over 1,700 individuals from this area. The organization is supported entirely by donations for individuals, businesses and local organizations.
In past years WCCOL has held an event this time of year to raise funds, but organizers are instead sending letters this week to all Winneshiek County residents with information about WCCOL programs and with an appeal for them to financially support those programs. Donations can be sent to Winneshiek County Celebration of Life, P.O. Box 314, Decorah, IA 52101.
