Monthly parenting workshops will focus on health, sexuality and body positivity

Posted: Wed, Sep 6, 2017 11:11 AM

Children frequently have misinformation about health, sexuality, drugs, and other critical topics.

We live in a time when kids of all ages are bombarded with age-sensitive material wherever they turn. Sexting and bullying are on the rise at an increasingly younger age, and teen moms are "celebrified." What is a concerned – and embarrassed – parent to do?

A group of parents would like to empower parents and caregivers of children to talk with their kids about health and sexuality with body positivity by offering monthly parent-oriented workshops.  These workshops are inspired by the nationally recognized program of lifespan sexuality education, Our Whole Lives (OWL), which offers curricula for all ages. To see more information about the curricula, check out  http://www.uua.org/re/owl.

Professionally facilitated, these will be offered at no charge, September thru May, on the second Wednesday of the month from 6:00 p.m.- - 7:30 p.m. at Decorah Middle School. The first class is Wednesday, September 13th.

Goals of this program include helping parents talk honestly and openly with their children and  providing sound and accurate information. The focus is on body positivity, decision-making, and creating a healthy understanding of themselves and their relationships with others. Parents will receive tools and then they can present and discuss with their children.

This program will provide strategies for parents and caregivers to navigate the tricky terrain and to become and remain the most credible and influential resource about sexuality in their children's lives. Parents and caregivers will gain skills to talk with their children about health and sexuality with body positivity.
