Downtown Decorah has been added to the National Register of Historic Places

The downtown commercial district in Decorah has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The designation makes owners of downtown properties elegible for some federal tax benefits.  It also makes the downtown area as a whole eligible for federal and state historic preservation grants.

Owners of properties listed on the National Register are also eligible to apply for a 25 percent state tax credit on qualifying rehabilitation projects.  The cost of the project must exceed either $25,000 or 50 percent of the property less the land before rehabilitation--whichever is less.  The State Historic Preservation Department must approve the project before work begins.
