The residential tax abatement program being offered by the City of Decorah is scheduled to sunset the end of this year.
The program gives five years worth of property tax abatements for property owners who have built a new house or significantly improved an existing house. The abatements apply up to $400,000.
Tax abatements were approved Tuesday evening for Gerald Kroshus and Vernoe Walker, Leon and Gloria Bockman and Mike Connell.
City Administrator Chad Bird asked city council members to meet before the end of the year to discuss whether to extend the tax abatement program. The city's Planning & Zoning Commission has already discussed the issue, recommending a $200,000 maximum and a three-year tax abatement program.
