Bob e-mails Mr. Answer Person: "Some folks are saying the sink hole up on Vernon Street/Upper Broadway may actually be a cave."
Mr. Answer Person says: "Some folks are exaggerating! As we told you earlier this month (http://www.decorahnews.com/news-stories/2017/08/17206.html) a consulting firm came to town with ground penetrating radar to see what had caused the sinkhole.
City engineering consultant LIndsay Erdman tells Mr. A.P. the firm found some small "holes" in the ground, but nothing resembling a cave. City crews have dumped stone into the hole and the situation has "stabilized," according to Erdman. One of the lanes of traffic has even been opened.
That's not to say city officials have come up with a permanent solution to the situation. Erdman says there will probably have to be some excavating to make sure the situation has stabilized and a repair will work.
Stay tuned!"
