The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office says it has received a report of another phone scam.
In this case, the caller contacted a local business and claimed to be with Alliant Energy, saying the business' power was going to be shut off because their utility bill hadn't been paid. After a lengthy phone call in which the caller appeared to be legitimate, they told the business to go to Casey's to pay the money so their power wouldn't be shut off.
Says the Sheriff's Office, "Please make sure not to give out any personal information and don't send any money." Their advice? Look at your actual bills and call a number connected with the company.
