Drones coming to DHS classrooms

Posted: Mon, Aug 14, 2017 8:51 PM

Drones are coming to Decorah High School classrooms, thanks to funding from a career/technical education grant. A drone has been purchased for vocational agricultural studies, since the use of drones is becoming a major component of current farming technology.

The Decorah Community School Board passed the first reading of an "Unmanned Aircraft – Drones" policy on Monday night. The policy is broad and bans use or possession of such equipment on (or above) school property except as granted by the superintendent. The Iowa State High School Athletic Association already has a policy that prohibits the use of drones over high school properties for covering athletic events.

Boards members were very supportive but encouraged thorough training for any designated users.
