County supervisors adjust property taxes on six flooded properties

Posted: Tue, Aug 8, 2017 4:40 PM

Six properties flooded during last August's heavy rainfall are now the property of Winneshiek County.  The county used FEMA funds to purchase the houses destroyed in the flooding, then hired a contractor to tear down the homes.

That means the properties are now officially owned by Winneshiek County.  Because the county does not pay property taxes on the property it owns, county supervisors have approved tax abatements as adjustments to the property taxes that will be charged on the property.  The move means the six properties also will not be paying property taxes for cities, school districts and other governments as of the date the properties became county properties.
