First Lutheran Church (Upper Broadway), The Decorah Friends Meeting (East Water Street) and the Assembly of God at the Freeport Christian Life Center are hosting neighborhood block parties on Tuesday, August 8th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
It is hoped that this will become an annual community-building event with more block parties throughout the city next year. The public is encouraged to attend any of these parties in their own or another neighborhood. Invite your neighbors to come along with you for an evening of fun. In case of rain, festivities will move indoors.
These parties may include visits from local police, firefighters and other city officials. Besides these visitors, parties may include desserts, games for young and old, music on the lawn, watermelon eating contests, and more.
According to one of the organizers, Leslie Sand, "The idea came from the national Neighborhood Night Out, which is an effort to build community in cities."
