Winneshiek County employees working in the Courthouse will soon be given an update to their employee manual that officially declares the building a "Weapons Free Courthouse."
The Iowa Supreme Court issued a weapons ban at courthouses across the state as of June 13th. The language approved Monday by Winneshiek County supervisors states, "It is the policy of...Winneshiek County..to enforce the Supreme Court Order."
As a result, the updated employee manual will state, "Dangerous weapons are prohibited in the Courthouse (and) adjacent county-owned buildings and grounds surrounding the Courthouse. Employees are not allowed to carry dangerous weapons in the Courthouse, in the county-owned buildings and on the grounds surrounding the Courthouse. This prohibition does not apply to employees with a professional carry permit."
