Identity theft is a significant problem.  While it can happen to anyone, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk. Proper disposal of documents and items that contain personal, confidential information is key to protection.

Viking State Bank & Trust in Decorah is offering a free shredding service once a month to help community members safely dispose of their confidential information.  Bank statements, expired credit or debit cards, credit card offers, paycheck stubs, cancelled checks from years past, medical or legal information and anything that contains your financial information or your personal identification, such as social security number or signature, are all items that should be shredded.  Types of important documents you should not shred, but rather keep secured, include, but are not limited to, birth certificates, marriage licenses, divorce papers, death certificates, military records, social security cards, copies of wills, among others.

Friday's shredding event will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at both Viking State Bank & Trust locations in Decorah--the main bank at 321 West Water Street and the branch bank at 1801 Old Stage Road.
