Accident reported northwest of Calmar

An accident northwest of Calmar on Tuesday afternoon caused $15,000 in damages and sent a Protivin man to the hospital.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office says 21-year-old Alondra Unzueta Castro of Protivin was driving on 210th Street, west of 315th Avenue, around 2:00 when another vehicle was driving westbound on 210th Street, possibly driving in the middle of the gravel road.  Unzueta Castro moved toward the south shoulder of the roadway, partially entering the ditch, lost control and entered the south ditch before striking a concrete box culvert in the south ditch.

Unzueta Castro was extricated from the vehicle by civilians in the area.  He was taken to Regional Health Services for Howard County in Cresco by ambulance.
