You can now buy fireworks in Decorah.

Earlier this year the Iowa Legislature changed state law regarding the sale of fireworks, removing the statewide prohibition.  The new law allows fireworks to be sold--although local municipalities can write rules governing the sale of fireworks.  City of Decorah officials have been working on new city ordinance language that would allow the sale of fireworks within the city limits, but would limit sales to specific commercial zoning districts.

Bellino Fireworks from Omaha, Nebraska has opened a tent to sell fireworks in the Centrum Plaza.  Because the tent is on property that is already zoned commercial, the venture is in compliance.

The City's Public Safety Committee has recommended keeping the ordinance language prohibiting the discharge of fireworks by individuals within the city limits.  That means you can buy fireworks--but you're not supposed to set them off within city limits.
