A city committee has approved some changes in city ordinances covering the sale of fireworks.
The Iowa Legislature earlier this year changed state law regarding the sale of fireworks, removing the statewide prohibition. The new law allows fireworks to be sold--although local municipalities can write rules governing the sale of fireworks.
Decorah City Administrator Chad Bird says firework vendors "have not been beating a path to City Hall," so this shouldn't be a major issue before the 4th of July.
The City's Public Safety Committee has recommended keeping the ordinance language prohibiting the discharge of fireworks by individuals within the city limits. Organizations will still be allowed to put on fireworks displays if they receive a permit.
The recommended new ordinance language will allow the sale of fireworks within the city limits, but sales will be limited to specific commercial zoning districts.
