First grade and special education students throughout Winneshiek County have been participating this spring in "Trees for Kids," an educational tree planting program.  John Cline Elementary and St. Benedict School in Decorah, South Winneshiek Elementary and De Sales in Ossian, North Winneshiek, Turkey Valley and CFS in Spillville participated.

Fort Atkinson Nursery owner Scott Sindelar donated seedling Black Hill Spruce trees for students to plant.  Iowa State University Extension staff member Beth Holthaus helped with the planting, as did Winneshiek County Master Gardeners Maryann Baker, Bob Davis, Jim Lage, Dave and Joy Roslien, Ed Brooks and Kevin Sand.

The students were able to plant their own trees.  They also learned how to care for their trees.
