Ossian attorney Nathan Moonen has been named Winneshiek County Magistrate for another four years.
Winneshiek County has had two magistrates—Moonen and Postville attorney Charles Kelly--but the Iowa Legislature has cut funding to Iowa's court system. The fiscal 2017 funding of the state's judicial branch was $5.4 million below what was requested—even before the legislature cut another $3 million from the budget.
That meant the Winneshiek County Judicial Magistrate Appointing Commission this week interviewed candidates for one position, not two.
Moonen was selected to be the only magistrate starting August 1st of this year through July 31st of 2021. He will receive an annual salary of $39,438.00.
