Both the City of Decorah and Winneshiek County have opened bids for next winter's road salt supply and the result is encouraging.
Winneshiek County Engineer Lee Bjerke says, "The average price is down roughly $4.00 per ton from last year. We've ordered 25,000 tons so if we use our order it will be a $100,000 savings."
Decorah City Street Commissioner Kevin Nelson says, "The City of Decorah accepted a bid of $69.70 per ton (down from $74.63 last year) for 500 tons of salt. The savings could be almost $2,500 this year.
