Letter to the Editor: A new suggestion on how to replace John Cline Elementary School

(Decorah Ward 5 Councilperson Charles Lore has submitted the following Letter to the Editor about the John Cline Replacement Project):

"The Decorah City Council Property Committee met March 20th to discuss the request for property to build John Cline. If you are interested, the meeting was videotaped and can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op_pfHoQKWY.

The request for the softball diamond property is just one issue that needs to be discussed.  There are many issues that need to be resolved before any commitments are made.

I would like to share an idea shared with me by a Decorah business owner.  (What if) the city of Decorah ended State Street at Heivly Street?  Then give that section of State Street from Heivly Street  to Claiborne Drive to the school district.  The school district could take the money offered to the city for the ball diamond property and use it to purchase the two houses on Riverside Street.  This would allow the school district to have one continuous and maybe safer elementary campus from the ball diamond to Riverside Street.  The city could then work on straightening out Heivly Street and improve the paving to handle the heavy traffic it already carries.

I told that individual it was something to think about and that I would ask for input from the public.  If you would want to talk to me, call 382-8501 or email me at milkdr@yahoo.com.  Looking forward to hearing from you."
