Bridge removal will cost $16,000

County Engineer Lee Bjerke says the quote he received from Brennan Construction of Lansing to remove the destroyed Dahly Bridge from the Upper Iowa River was a daily figure, not a total cost.

Bjerke cited a $4,000 figure to county supervisors on Monday--but later in the day told them that was a per day figure, not a total.  That means the removal is expected to cost $16,000.

County supervisors also received a bid of $35,000 from Julie Bowers of NSRGA for a removal that would preserve the historic bridge.  But supervisors were concerned about getting the removal done quickly, so canoeists and kayakers weren't threatened by the debris, and by the additional $19,000 cost.  Supervisors were nervous that insurance money would not cover the additional cost if they knew the low bid was not accepted.

Crews from Brennan are expected to be on the scene Tuesday.
