The Decorah prairie butterfly garden is beginning to bloom

Posted: Mon, May 1, 2017 12:32 PM

The Prairie Smoke are in bloom in the Decorah Prairie Butterfly Garden. The Prairie Gardeners have planted prairie roses, prairie phlox and wild quinine, adding to the 57 other types of plants. There are a number of plants ready to be adopted.

The Prairie Gardeners welcome you to join them with your tools and curiosity. They garden every Tuesday morning from 9:00-11:00 a.m. from May until October.

If Tuesday mornings don't work, they offer an Adopt-a-Plant Program so that you may work at a time of your choosing. Once you have adopted and been introduced to your plant, you will be responsible for its care throughout the growing season. The plant plots are approximately 6 feet x 8 feet. A helper will help get you started and answer any questions you may have. The city provides water and mulch and picks up the garden refuse.

Part-time gardeners are needed to reach the goals of the many volunteers who created the Decorah Prairie Butterfly Garden in 2002. The garden is intended to introduce visitors to the native plants of the prairie; provide habitat for butterflies and other pollinators; and to make this handicapped-accessible calm oasis available for all to enjoy.
