Luther College says it will continue gender identity protections

In a statement to Luther College faculty, staff and students in the school's latest campus newsletter, two Luther officials have stated, "Luther's policies and processes pertaining to gender identity have not and will not change."

The statement by Luther vice president and dean for student life Corey Landstrom and Luther associate director of human resources and title IX coordinator Matt Bills was made because in February a letter to colleges and universities from the Department of Justice and the Department of Education withdrew previously issued guidance regarding the rights of transgender students in schools, including private colleges, that receive federal funds.  State protections were not affected by the federal action.

The statement by Landstrom and Bills says Luther will continue to provide housing options for students who wish to live in accordance with their gender identity.  It also notes Luther does not allow gender-based discrimination or harassment and provided numerous gender neutral restrooms on campus.

The statement concludes by saying, "As people of all backgrounds, we embrace diversity and challenge one another to learn in community, to discern our callings, and to serve with distinction for the common good. Discrimination based on gender identity is inconsistent with our educational mission, and all faculty, staff and students deserve to be treated with respect and dignity."
