Registration open for Luther College Discovery Camps

Posted: Wed, Apr 12, 2017 10:33 AM

Luther College is offering discounted early registration fees through this Saturday for five Discovery Camps in June.

The camps offer weeklong environmental programming to students entering first through ninth grade who are interested in learning more about the natural world. Camps take place on the Luther campus and surrounding natural areas of Decorah. Programs feature opportunities to investigate various habitats, track wild animals, learn to make a fire without matches, build a shelter, observe plant and animal interactions and test water quality in area streams.

Space is limited in all programs, so early registration is recommended.

"Wild Wonderers," for kids entering first or second grade, will engage young learners in nature play for first-graders June 5th and 6th, and for second-graders June 7th, 8th and 9th.

"Adventurers Camp," for kids entering third through sixth grade, will provide the chance to build solar ovens, cars and model turbines June 12th through the 16th .

"Pathfinders Camp," for kids entering fifth through seventh grade, teaches skills campers can enjoy throughout their lives, like biking, geocaching, fishing, canoeing and birding June 19th to 23rd.

"Kindernature," for preschool-aged students, gives little ones a chance to hike, build, play and learn in the natural world June 19th to 23rd.

"Survival Camp," for kids entering grades six through nine, includes an overnight campout and is designed to teach basic survival techniques and wilderness awareness June 26th to 30th.

Early registration fees are $90 for first-grade Wild Wonderers, $105 for second-grade Wild Wonderers, $155 for Adventurers Camp, $170 for Pathfinders Camp, $65 for Kindernature, and $180 for Survival Camp. All fees include course instruction, materials and a Discovery Camp T-shirt. Partial scholarships based on financial need are available for all of the programs; families needing assistance are strongly encouraged to apply.
