Legislator health insurance bill introduced by State Senator Michael Breitbach has now passed the Iowa House as well and has been sent to Governor Terry Branstad

Legislation that would require state lawmakers to pay 20 percent of the cost of the health insurance they receive from the state has now passed both the Iowa Senate and Iowa House.

The legislation was introduced by State Senator Michael Breitbach when he was first elected to the legislature in 2013 and was reintroduced by him this year.  Even when the measure did not pass in previous years, he voluntarily paid 20 percent of the state's health insurance premiums, writing a separate check back to the State of Iowa for the balance.

Other state legislators had come under criticism for paying either $30 a month or nothing for their health insurance.

Senate File 230 passed the Iowa Senate earlier this year and was sent to the Iowa House, which passed the measure unanimously on Tuesday.
