Decorah City Council drops talk of a truck route in Decorah

The Decorah City Council will not pursue establishing a truck route through town.

Two weeks ago the proposal drew a large turnout at the last city council meeting, with several area farmers speaking against the truck route because they said it would create hardships for them.

Monday evening the city's Streets Committee resumed the discussion of a truck route, but several committee members, including chairman Gary Rustad, opposed the idea.  Said Rustad, "I just don't see an alternative (truck route)."

The conversation continued later during the full city council meeting.  City Engineer Lindsay Erdman said that while it would be nice to find a paved route for trucks to take around the northern parts of the city, "we've always struggled" with that task.

City Council members Dan Bellrichard and Steve Luse discussed using College Drive, Heivly Street and Mechanic Street as a truck route, but that idea went nowhere.

At this point, the discussion of setting up a truck route in Decorah appears to be over.
