A 77-year-old West Union woman has now been issued a traffic ticket for an accident Tuesday afternoon on Highway 9 that sent her to the hospital.

Decorah Police say Carolyn Havenstrite was westbound on Highway 9 around 3:20 Tuesday afternoon when she pulled off the road after missing a turn.  She then re-entered the highway and was making a u-turn to head east on Highway 9 when she was struck by a car driven by 34-year-old Kenneth Hougen of Waukon.  Hougen told police he tried to avoid crashing with Havenstrite by changing lanes, braking and honking his horn, however, he could not avoid her car.

As reported earlier, Havenstrite was airlifted to Gundersen Hospital in La Crosse after being first admitted to Winneshiek Medical Center.  A passenger in her car has now been identified as her husband, 78-year-old Wayne Havenstrite of West Union.  He was taken to Winneshiek Medical Center as well, but his injuries were described as "minor, non-incapacitating."
