The famous Sattre Store in northeast Winneshiek County has ended its life as a general store. The building has been closed down and some items inside the building will be sold.
But that won't be the end of the building. Owners Rick and Dana Dotzenrod and managers Ted Marcu and Jess Tranauskas have big plans for the Sattre Store.
The Sattre Store opened in 1892 and has spent much of the time as a general store serving rural Winneshiek County--and attracting tourists who wanted to see the place that National Geographic once named "the most remote spot in Iowa."
Sattre Store property owner Rick Dotzenrod tells decorahnews.com the building will keep much of its decor and will reopen in the future as a lodging rental. He says there wasn't enough traffic in the area to support a general store, but many people visit the area for fishing and vacations and he expects the demand to be high for lodging.
Dana Dotzenrod's son, Ted Marcu, will be in charge of the renovation, with the assistance of his wife, Jess Tranauskas. Rick Dtozenrod says the Sattre Store will be listed on AirBnB when it is ready for rentals.
