What is Winneshiek County's tornado history?

On Saturday, June 20th, 1908, a storm front reported to be 20 miles wide roared through Winneshiek County--and a tornado touched down in Decorah

This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa.

It's a good time to remind people that tornadoes not only COULD happen in Winneshiek County, but they HAVE happened.

The La Crosse Office of the National Weather Service has a list of tornadoes in Winneshiek County in the last 100 years (http://www.weather.gov/arx/winneshiek)--and there are 23 tornadoes from 1918 to 2017.

There were two F4 tornadoes in Winneshiek County in the last century, including one on May 5, 1965 that injured 17 people in the area.  Another tornado on July 19th, 1994 was list as an F3 tornado.

The most recent funnel cloud in Winneshiek County, according to the National Weather Service, was on August 19th of 2009, when an EF0 tornado touched down one mile northeast of Calmar, causing $5,000 in property damage and $35,000 in crop damage.  Three other tornadoes touched down the same afternoon--in Chickasaw, Fayette, and Howard counties.
