The Iowa Senate has approved legislation that would allow law enforcement agencies in the state to crack down on people who text while driving.
Senate File 234 makes texting while driving a primary offense. Currently, texting while driving is a secondary offense which means an officer cannot pull someone over just because they are texting.
State Senator Michael Breitbach of Strawberry Point, who acted as floor manager of the bill during Iowa Senate discussion, says the legislation will allow people to make phone calls and as a GPS, but NOT to view text messages, email, browse the internet, or play games on their phones while driving.
The bill passed the Senate 43-6. It now has been sent on to the Iowa House.
