Decorah PTO Spell-a-Thon is getting underway

Posted: Mon, Mar 13, 2017 3:59 PM

The 2017 Decorah PTO Spell-a-Thon to raise money for the Decorah School District is getting underway.  Students in Kindergarten--6th grades will be collecting pledges over the next few weeks from family, friends and neighbors. Spelling tests will be given to all students the week of April 3rd.

All students in grades Kindergarten--6th who return their completed pledge envelope, will have their name entered into a drawing at their school for a gift certificate from a local merchant. The classroom that collects the most pledges at each school will be awarded a pizza party and the student who raises the most pledges will receive $100 from Decorah Bank and Trust.

In 2013 and 2015, this event raised approximately $30,000 each year.  The PTO works on a two year budget which is determined by the success of the Spell-a-thon event. Some of the programs supported in the past were supplementing Decorah Schools library collections, West Side/community natural playground, kid striders, college scholarships and a spotlight in the Carrie Lee Elementary Auditorium.

Proceeds from this year's fundraiser will help fund upcoming Author Visits, Special Events, Theatre Performances, the Back-to-School Pool Party, and other general projects.
