Des Moines Register editorial criticizes legislation written by State Senator Michael Breitbach

criticizing Senate File 230, a bill created by State Senator Michael Breitbach of Strawberry Point.

The legislation would require state lawmakers to pay 20 percent of the cost of the health insurance they receive from the state.

The newspaper editorial urges lawmakers to right the wrong of underpaying for prior health insurance coverage by repaying the state what they owe, instead of waiting for the new law to kick in in 2018.

Breitbach, however, stresses that is what he has done since he was elected to the legislature in 2013: "I have voluntarily paid 20 percent of my premiums.  All of it could not be withheld from my payroll check and I had to write a separate check back for the balance."
