The Viking Cafe of Decorah High School served the first lunch of the season on Thursday. The Viking Cafe will serve meals 16 times this semester.

DHS instructor Dana Einck manages the restaurant and has been certified for the "Serv-Safe" program, through the National Restaurant Association.  Students in the Foods II class are also part of the "Pro-Start" curriculum offered through the National Restaurant Association and can test to receive a certificate from that organization. The Iowa Department of Inspections and appeals has also visited the site and provided its stamp of approval for restaurant operations.

Each meal is prepared by the Foods lll class and served by Foods ll and Hospitality. The Hospitality students plan the menus and complete the cost analysis of the menus for the remainder of the year. Thursday's menu included broccoli cheese soup, ham balls, sweet onion roll and white chocolate raspberry cheesecake.

Student Hailey Wilkins enjoys working with the customers and being social, she likes each different step from the start to the finish of the food process.

"I like creating the menus and look forward to customer service and interaction." said student Lindsey McEnaney. She said it was nice getting to know people better in this class setting and to work together to figure out meals.

Student Kamryn Langreck's favorite part of class is creating the menus and seeing the menus through to the end result. "There are a lot of responsibilities and the whole class is depending on each other," said Langreck.

The Viking Cafe is open most Thursdays from 12:00 p.m.--1:00 p.m. Cost for each meal is $7.00. Contact Denise or Mary at DHS office 563-382-3643 for reservations.
