Peanut butter school lunch discussions put on hold

The discussion of what to do about students and their families related to negative balances on food service accounts was delayed by the Decorah Community School Board. The board was conflicted on what the outcome of policies might be. Goals also varied: one goal is to collect money, one is to feed students who might be in need, and another is to avoid potential embarrassment for students. One member of the board was absent, and another expressed concern that the public get an incorrect impression of board response, so the discussion was tabled.

The state has mandated that a policy regarding outstanding balances be implemented by next fall, although there is not a specific agenda for what that policy might be.
